  • Independent. Impartial. Trauma-Informed.

The Independent Investigations Office provides independent and impartial oversight on investigations into sexual misconduct, discrimination and harassment against UBC community members.

The Independent Investigations Office is committed to ensuring that investigations into sexual violence, discrimination and harassment are guided by the principles of procedural fairness, confidentiality, respect and a trauma-informed approach. We investigate complaints under Policy #131 (Sexual Assault & Other Sexual Misconduct) and Policy #3 (Discrimination & Harassment).

We are:

  • Independent: The Independent Investigations Office is not part of the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office (SVPRO) and is arm’s-length from the university. This helps ensure a fair, unbiased process.
  • Impartial: The Independent Investigations Office is a neutral office committed to ensuring that everyone’s rights are respected. We do not advocate for the complainant or the respondent.
  • Trauma-Informed: With Independent Investigations Office investigators, you can expect conversation – not interrogation. Evidence is assessed and findings of fact are made with knowledge of the impact that trauma has on memory and presentation.
